Bohemian Style Bedroom Ideas

Bohemian is a word most often associated with nonconformance, gypsies, and all things that are unconventional. The word originated from Bohemia, a historical area in Central Europe, whose inhabitants went against the rigid rules of society. In today's world, bohemian applies to those who do not abide by the norms and prefer to live life by their own standards. So you have bohemian clothing, fashion, art, and even beliefs.

Designing a bohemian style bedroom is a whole lot of fun and you can use all your creativity and ideas to come up with the most unconventional ways for a complete bedroom makeover. Getting there is easy and not very expensive either. Boldness of color is the most prominent aspect in any bohemian style décor, whether it's the walls or the furnishings. You need not put a lot of thought whether one bright color will match well with another. It may seem odd, even eccentric, but then that's the whole point. The idea is not to do anything that you might do with a regular bedroom.

Bohemian Style Bedrooms

* Starting with the walls, paint them any deep, bright color of your choice. Choose from red, orange, hot pink, bright blue, etc. Plan on an accent wall with a different color altogether. You could even use a vividly colored or textured wallpaper to decorate your walls. Another option is to bedeck the walls by pasting faux jewels and a whole lot of glitter all over it. Hang mosaic artwork, colorful tapestries made of handwoven fabric and replete with pictorial designs.
* For the linen, again, remember you need to use rich, deep colors. Use a color shade that contrasts with the color of your walls. Use bright prints for your shams and pillow covers. Spread patchwork quilts over your bedspread. Use silk scarves over your bolsters or hang them alongside curtains. If your floors lack carpeting, go in for area rugs that are made of geometric patterns. Replace chairs with ottomans, especially the Moroccan poufs which will truly enhance the bohemian look and give it a gypsy-like feel.

* If you have a four-poster bed with a canopy, adorn it with tassels, or string colorful beads together and hang them over the canopy. You could also drape sheer silk fabric or colorful ribbons over the canopy and bed covers. Hand beaded curtains over windows and doors. A mosquito net over the canopy, or for that matter, hung on the walls, is another great idea.
* Buy a whole lot of accessories that will spruce up your room. Place them everywhere. Bohemian is quite the opposite of clutter-free. Go shopping in a thrift store, flea market, antiques shop, and even yard sales. These are the best places where you can find a whole lot of knick-knacks for your room without putting a strain your wallet. Buy small statues, exotic lampshades, trinkets, wall hangings, art pieces, candelabras, funky pottery, old lanterns, wooden sculptures, whatever you can lay your hands on, and that which ideally is not a part of your standard decorating items. Place them in your room, above the headboard, on the dressers and sideboards, wherever there is place. Prop old stuffed toys among pillows.
* If you are a music freak, adorn your walls with posters of your favorite music stars and rock bands. Your room will get the retro look, prevalent in the 1960s.

* You can make use of any old furniture you have, that you have not used in ages just because it was outdated. Get it out, clean it, and place it in the room. Adorn it with brightly colored throws.
* Place colored glass vases with real or silk flowers in your bedroom. Sculptures and busts also give a bohemian feel to the décor.
* Accentuate the room with soft lighting, an important aspect of bohemian style decoration, which essentially gives it a cozy feeling. Use lamps that emit a soft glow and bathe the entire room in luminescence.
* Hang a crystal chandelier. Deck it with sequined fabric or a chain of beads.

When it comes to using bohemian style to decorate your bedroom, there is no dearth of ideas. The possibilities are endless. Don't opt for neutral colors or minimalist art for the room décor. The more the accessories in your room, the more bohemian it is! Don't be scared to go overboard with your decoration. Use a splash of vibrant colors. Mix and match eclectic art pieces and jazz up your bedroom. That's the norm! Get your creative juices flowing. Go boho!
